Susan was the first person I saw when I walked into the lobby of an advertising agency. She was using a typewriter at a desk next to the receptionist. We smiled at each other.
I introduced myself to the receptionist and gave her a card I had designed myself. She liked it. So much, in fact, she immediately called the creative director and told him he should take a look at my portfolio.
After a few more interviews, I was offered a job as a rookie art director. Turns out, Susan was the rookie copywriter and we were paired as the newest creative team.
In our careers, we’ve created marketing materials for everything from cat food to caskets. In our marriage, we’ve dealt with all the usual ups and downs and a few that were not so usual. But through it all, the good and the bad, we’ve always been a great team.
Friends have said we remind them of Tracy & Hepburn or Nick & Nora Charles. Sometimes it’s been more like Sid & Nancy. But when it comes right down to it, we work well–we work best–together. Maybe that’s why we’ve been married over thirty years.
